CORE LIBRARY INCLUSION PRACTICES

Here you’ll find a list of core inclusion practices at libraries across Greater Manchester. This might give you some ideas of what to include on your event pages. Or even new things you could try to make your events more accessible.

 

If there’s anything we’ve missed, let us know.

Bolton Libraries:

  • disabled access to the library and to all rooms. 

  • Accessible Toilets, facilities 

  • ramps.

  • easily accessible shelving.

  • well designed and sited seating and tables.

  • counters of varying heights.

  • induction loops for people with a hearing loss. 

  • equipment and aids for people with sensory impairments.

  • children's ear defenders are available to borrow in all our Library and Museum spaces.

  • all computers have features which enable people with additional needs to use them

  • large print books for adults and children

  • spoken word cassettes and CDs

  • printed picture books for shared reading

  • a free request service which will obtain material for you in alternative formats from anywhere in the country

Bury Libraries:

Bury library

  • Wheelchair accessible.

  • Pay and Display parking is available outside the library for up to 2 hours.

Radcliffe Library

  • Wheelchair accessible.

  • Free parking is available.

Prestwich Library and Adult Learning Centre

  • You must pay for parking, but it is accessible.

  • Parking available.

  • Age Friendly Hour, weekdays 10-11am – priority support for older customers.

Hulme High Street Library, Library and Leisure Centre

  • Underground car parking.

Longsight Library and Learning Centre

  • Many books in different languages. 

  • Car park behind the library, access from Kirkmanshulme Lane. 

  • Accessible toilet. 

  • Guide dogs welcome.

  • Wheelchair accessible.  

  • Age Friendly Hour, weekdays 10-11am – priority support for older customers. (Closed on Fridays.)

Miles Platting Community Library

  • Guide dogs welcome.

  • No car park, customers must park on the road.

Moss Side Powerhouse Library

  • Accessible car parking available.

New Moston Community Library

  • Limited accessible car parking available.

  • No cash payments at the library, but can make payments over the phone with a debit or credit card on 219 2393.

Newton Heath Library

  • Accessible parking behind the library.

  • Wheelchair accessible. 

North City Library

  • Disabled parking at rear. 

  • Wheelchair accessible. 

  • Guide dogs welcome. 

  • Age Friendly Hour, Tuesdays 10-11am – priority support for older customers. (Closed on Fridays.)

Northenden Community Library

  • Small accessible car park at the front of Parkway Green House. 

  • Wheelchair accessible. 

  • Do not take cash payments at the library, but you can make payments over the phone with a debit or credit card by calling 2192393. 

Withington Library

  • Accessible toilet. 

  • Baby changing facilities. 

  • Guide dogs welcome. 

  • Wheelchair accessible. 

  • Age Friendly Hour, Weekdays 10-11am – priority support for older customers. (Excluding Tuesdays.)

Oldham Libraries:

 

Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre 

  • Regular library service such as item borrowing.

  • PC access.

  • Wi-Fi use. 

 

 

Gallery Oldham

  • Suitable for all ages from 0+. 

  • Accessible Wheelchair.

  • Guide dog  available.

  • Public toilets available on-site both Disable.

  • baby changing facilities.

  • Car parking is on Southgate street Car park and at a reasonable price,  visitor can park on the Sainsbury’s car pack up to 3 hours.

Rochdale Libraries:

 

Balderstone Library

  • Printers, photocopiers and scanners.

  • The building has ramped access.

Castleton Library

  • The LIbrary has disabled access.

Rochdale Central Library and Customer Service Centre

  • Meeting rooms.

Stockport Libraries:

Stockport Central Library

  • Specialist equipment for a range of needs, including vision, hearing, reading and mobility.

  • Specialist computer equipment available on request, including: spoken word software, screen magnification, larger key keyboards / high visibility keyboards.

  • Home library service for anyone with limited access to a library, also available to their carers. Library staff will choose books, DVDs or talking books for the recipient based on their chosen genre. 

Tameside Libraries:

  • Induction loops (T position).

  • Large-print books.

  • Talking books.

  • Borrowbox (audio and e-books).

  • Visually impaired reading group.

  • Home Library service.

  • Computer magnification and speech facilities, including: windows magnifier, large keyboards and Microsoft narrator.

  • Services and facilities available with a flexible approach upon request to suit individual needs.

  • Rainbow triangle visible on each LGBT+ collection and book.

  • Range of languages available, including: Bangla, Urdu, Gujarati, Polish (Ashton Library), Chinese (Denton Library) 

  • Dual language books available 

Trafford Libraries:

Altrincham Library

  • Toilet for disabled users.

  • People's Network PC accessible for wheelchair users.

  • Short-term parking is available on Market Street where charges apply.

Coppice Library

  • All services on ground level with automatic door entry.

  • Large free car park.

  • People's Network PC accessible for wheelchair users.

  • Large, cheerful children's section.

  • There is a library car park with 20 spaces plus two disabled bays.

Hale Library

Sale Library

  • All services on ground level with automatic door entry

  • Four disabled access parking spaces available in front of Sale Police Station, adjacent to Sale Waterside

  • People's Network PC accessible for wheelchair users

  • Counter loop

  • Toilet for disabled users located in the foyer

  • Baby changing facilities

  • There is a fee paying QPark on Broad Road. Three disabled bays are available on Tatton Place at the rear of the Waterside complex.

Stretford Library

Wigan Central Library

  • Visually impaired reading group (VIP’s) – first Tuesday of every month, 10:30-11:30am. 

  • A wide selection of talking books available in the library.

  • Coffee morning for deaf and blind people – every Friday, 11am-1pm. A chance for people with visual and hearing impairments to meet, chat and support each other.

  • Wheelchair accessible throughout.
